What is Forest School?
Forest School is the name for an approach to educating children in the outdoors environment on a regular basis.
Forest School is an opportunity for your child to experience nature and the outdoor environment in a safe, secure and hands on way.
Why Forest School?
Children learn best from first hand experiences. Exploring, playing and learning using a range of activities is what Forest School is all about. Building a sense of independence, high self esteem and team work are important parts of Forest School.
There is much evidence to show how regular experience of Forest School can have dramatic and profound influences on child development. Statistics show that children of all abilities make better progress when Forest School experiences are brought back into the conventional classroom.
What will my child do at Forest School?
Each term, each class will complete a series of approximately six weekly Forest School sessions at our Forest School site. Children will learn about the natural environment and acquire skills, wherever possible, linked to the main-school topics.
Examples of activities completed at Forest School are:
Animal and insect tracking
Using tools safely such as pen knives and bow saws
Lighting a fire to make popcorn and warm marshmallows and hot chocolate
Where is the school's Forest School site?
The school uses The Warren as well as The Black Lion Green, both in Hay on Wye. The walk to and from these area take approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
